Dr. Henry Storper – Cold as ...

Dr. Henry Storper – Cold as the rocks which surround him

We had an appointment with Dr. Henry Storper. He was 30 minutes late, which I thought was very unusual as psychiatrists generally hew to a strict schedule, perhaps running over by 5-10 minutes at most. When he finally greeted us, it was without even the slightest apology for keeping us waiting.

Upon being ushered into his office, one is confronted by hundreds of rocks, crystals, fossils and other geological specimens occupying practically every square inch of horizontal space…shelves, tables, windowsills, and so forth. I looked around for a comfortable chair or couch, as one would expect in any psychiatrist’s office, but saw a couch covered with a sheet with more geological pieces displayed on it! There were also many photos of his grandchildren on the coffee table, along with some lovely rocks, of course. There’s nothing wrong with displaying a few items to communicate one’s personal interests, but this office seemed more of a shrine to his personal collection than a room where a patient could be made to feel relaxed and comfortable.

Towards the back of the room, there was a single swiveling cushioned chair covered with a knitted throw, possibly made by one of his patients. So rather than a relaxing couch or chair with the doctor’s chair next it, one is directed to two stiff half-backed office chairs positioned on the opposite side of a very large and heavy wooden office desk, with Dr. Storper ensconced in his executive chair. Separated by 5 feet of hardwood, the feeling is more of being interviewed for a loan by a bank officer than being guided and healed by a therapist/psychiatrist. The large physical distance between doctor and patient, being positioned opposite each other, the general stiffness of the setting, and being surrounded by hundreds of old inanimate objects which interest him (should his primary focus not be his patient?) were all portents of our ensuing interaction.

Dr. Storper’s conversational style, rather than empathetic and engaging, was matter-of-fact, clinical, and aloof, at times with a hint of condescension. He was not encouraging, and I do not remember him ever smiling. His expertise is obviously the dispensation of medicine and not therapy. The irony of it all is that he insisted he would not serve as psychiatrist if we went to see a separate therapist, as is frequently the case.

His wife’s name and MSW (Master of Social Work) title remain prominently displayed on the office directory and outside the office door despite, according to the staff, her having long abandoned her practice to spend time with her grandchildren. She now serves as office manager. I imagine long ago her role was the empathetic therapist while he prescribed the meds.

In sum, if you’re seeking someone with a positive, empathetic, and engaging demeanor in whom to confide your innermost thoughts and feelings, you might skip this rather stony character.

DO THEY CARE?

I would of thought that a Dr of this kind would of cared about his patients. I guess not it appears that when you all ready have problems in your life he doesn't make it any easier for you. He does not return calls and does not help to find a solution to a problem. He would rather AVOID the problem all together and leave you lost and confused.
