Founded in 1798, the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps is a government agency engaged in the promotion of health care and disease prevention programs. It is involved in the regulation of food and drugs; biomedical research; and mental health and drug abuse control programs. The agency provides provide clinical care and response services to public health disasters and emergencies, as well as develop and implement mental illness prevention and treatment programs for communities. It works with a team of more than 6,000 full-time public health care professionals. The agency provides officers from diverse medical professions that include physicians, nurses, pharmacists, dentists, dietitians, engineers, scientists, therapists and veterinarians. It offers health care professionals for several government agencies, including the National Institutes of Health, Department of Agriculture, Environmental Protection Agency, and Food and Drug Administration. The U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps is a part of the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services.
