Provided by YP.comBe very cautious!! During a routine office visit Dr. Burson employed a standard nasal scope to examine my nasal passages. This device, similar to the device used to Pediatricians to look into childrens ears, except with a long lighted scope tube, was in my nasal passages for a cumulative total of 10-15 seconds. I didn't question Dr. Bursons actions as this device was a stand-alone, hand held implement that was hanging on the wall and I assumed it's use was covered in the standard office visit. No biopsy was taken during use of this device, nor was this topic ever discussed. It was a simple look up my nostrils. When the bill was received, in addition to $195 for the 10 minute office visit, there was a charge for use of the device, classified as a nasal endoscopy, for $343. Again, it was in my nostrils for a grand total of 10-15 seconds. I was not informed use of this device was outside the parameters of a routine exam, nor was I informed as to the price of it's use. I was never given an opportunity to make a decision on whether to proceed with it's use or not. Had I been prior informed, I would have declined use of this device as my sinus issues would not have warranted it's use and the associated $343 charge.
Lack of transparency in medical billing practices is the core of America's health care problems. We all think "as long as insurance covers it I'm good" but inappropriately high charges for medical services continue to push the price of health insurance higher each year, which is why it is unaffordable for so many people and we now face enactment of the Affordable Health Care Act. If medical establishments and practioners would price their services appropriately, the government wouldn't have to step in. Full disclosure: I'm not in favor of Obamacare. I'm in favor of fixing the core problem, being medical pricing and billing practices.
In closing, I would tell my best friend and any person on the street to beware of this behavior as a potential patient of the ENT Institute and other medical practices.
