I went to Spellman Hardwoods looking for plywood for a small project I wanted to complete. After I explained what I wanted to do, the lady that was helping me asked another guy in the front office what his thoughts were and he said "you're better off going to home depot, we are going to be more expensive". The lady still gave me a quote for a sheet of plywood and they were right, it was about $10.00 dollars more expensive than home depot.
I understand that maybe they were trying to save me time, but I wanted to also look at their other types of wood since I like to do a lot of wood working. However, I couldn't even make it past the front desk without them telling me to go to home depot. That is why I gave them one star for selection, because I wasn't given the oportunity to look at their inventory. In the brief interaction I do feel like they are knowledgeble about wood and their business. Still, I did not liked their customer service so I'm going to stick to home depot, just like they told me.

Spellman is by far the most versatile and competent hardwoods and plywood distributor in the valley. They have the best and most personable customer service, competitive price and fast delivery. I am a very tough procurement professional who demands the best price, quality, delivery and service and do not like to give up on any one of these. Do they meet all my essentials every time? No, none can. But they are one of the companies that meets my requirements most consistently. Can’t ask for more than that!

WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER! I’m an experienced woodworker, and am used to dealing with primarily “for the trade” woodworking suppliers. I was in search of several sheets of quality hardwood plywood for a home project. I selected Spellman Hardwoods (Phoenix location) based on the description of their product offering and related services from their website. They appeared to have everything I needed, including the sheet plywood, the ability to cut sheet goods to size, and two sizes of bar rails.

What a mistake! I didn’t get past the front counter.

This lumberyard had the worst counter service I’ve ever experienced. Examples:

-- After I approached the counter, the counterman chose to completely ignore me for a number of (uncomfortable) minutes while he, apparently, had more important tasks with which to deal: Answering the telephone several times (there were several other office staff members present), shuffling paperwork, and giving direction to other office staff.

-- I was finally greeted with, “What do you need, boss?” (A simple, and far more courteous “hello, how can I help you” would have been preferred.)

-- The counterman then proceeded to explain that, yes, they had sheet plywood, but no they didn’t cut to size (as implied in their website).

-- No, they didn’t have bar rails as stated on their website.

-- After giving me the price for the plywood ($80+ per 4’ x 8’ sheet, which I believe was very high), he also stated that they only took cash, no credit cards. (The website made no such statement.)

My conclusion: If you’re looking for hardwoods and quality customer service, skip Spellman Hardwoods. You’ll only end up aggravated!

Does not fully inform the customer

We went into Spellman Hardwoods last Friday and explained to the people at the desk that we wanted 12 x 2 boards and would like a quote. The person at the desk told us that the hard white maple was $4.10 a Board Foot. We made the decision to go with the maple based on that price. Today we went to pick out the boards we needed and were told at the desk there was a premium charged for boards larger than 10". This ended up costing us $100 more for a project than we expected and we feel that Spellman Hardwoods does not fully inform their customers. The people in the back are nice but we had to pull out and re-stack the boards ourselves.
