The Pittsburgh Pirates are a Major League Baseball team and one of six clubs in the Central Division of the National League. The team was founded in 1882 as a charter member of the American Association and was then transferred to the National League in 1887. Formerly called the Alleghenies and the Innocents, the club adopted its current name in 1890 after it was accused of pirating a player from a competing franchise. The Pirates won their first World Series championship in 1909, then claimed its fifth in 1979. During the 1970s, the team captured six division titles, two National League pennants, and two World Series championships. Some memorable players include Jim Pud Galvin, Rabbit Maranville, Lloyd and Paul Waner, Barry Bonds, Roberto Clemente, Ralph Kiner, Bill Mazeroski, and Willie Stargell. Former manager Jim Leyland was named National League Manager of the Year in 1990 and 92. The current general manager, Dave Littlefield, was appointed midway through the 2001 season. The Pirates play at PNC Park in Pittsburgh, Pa.
