I was a member of this gym for a year and everything was great, except when I signed up, I wasn't given a copy of my contract because they "couldn't get the copier to work". Then, suddenly, they ran a promotion offering everyone a lower price per month than I was paying (I was told I was ineligible for these savings) and because of it the gym became overcrowded to the point where every time I went there I had to wait about 20 minutes to get on the equipment I wanted to use. Of course it didn't help that at any given time there were 3 treadmills "out of service" which never seemed to be repaired.

I sent a request to cancel my membership at the end of my contract so that my contract wouldn't somehow get renewed and I wouldn't have to pay for a gym that I couldn't effectively use. I was then sent a letter postmarked April 9th, delivered April 10th that I owed a payment and if I didn't pay it by April 10th then I would be charged a late fee along with the membership cost.

I called the gym and asked them why I was being sent the letter since I sent in a request to have my membership cancelled and I should not have been "obligated" to pay anything as I was no longer under contract and had stated that my membership was to be terminated. They bounced me around to a few different employees and when I finally got the manager on the phone she berated me and treated me as if I were a child who didn't understand how the world works. She told me that I am unprofessional and that if I didn't pay for a month of membership that she would personally see to it that she ensured my bill got racked up to over a hundred dollars "easily" and then sent the bill over to bill collectors so that it would destroy my credit. The woman I spoke to was extremely unprofessional herself in her manner of speaking to me. She verbally assaulted me until I was in tears and then told me that "It's only $32. There's really no reason to cry over it." I tried to explain to her that I'm going through a rough time and money is extremely tight so $32 was not easy for me to spare. She told me that she didn't care about my money woes.

I asked her why I was even being considered obligated to maintain a membership when I was no longer under contract and she informed me that the contract states that I am required to give notice if I wish to cancel a membership. I informed her of my request to cancel and she told me that no one at the gym ever gave her the request so therefore it wasn't valid. Since I did not have a copy of my contract I asked her if she could send it to me via e-mail. She refused and told me that if I wished to see it I would have to come in in person. I was already on my way out and so I would not be around to go to Powerhouse that day, and since I only had that day to make a payment I was, in short, being told I would not be allowed to view my contract before making a payment unless I wished to pay extra for a late fee.

The level of noncooperation and disrespect I was shown ensures that I will never return to that gym, nor do I recommend that anyone else joins there unless they wish to be treated in such an unprofessional manner as this.
