Birthday Surprise?!

We have frequently been to this restaurant and always enjoyed the experience (except I don't approve of TV's in the dining area) thus we picked this restaurant to celebrate our son's 22nd birthday. We witnessed several episodes of celebration by staff of birthdays and anniversaries. We have been at several other restaurants for birthdays and the celebrant has always gotten a small dessert for free plus the staff fete. At the end of the meal the waitress asked if we wanted dessert (she had already been told it was my son's birthday). She said nothing about anything for my son that was free, thus I asked if they do anything for a birthday and she replied we had to buy dessert. None of us wanted a big dessert and had already spent well over $100.00 for the meal. We could have cared less if the staff sang 'Happy Birthday', but even a cupcake, or a scoop of ice cream would have been nice for my son. I realize it is a petty thing, and maybe they get a lot of fake birthday people, but my son had a card visible and his license if that is the problem. Unfortunately, this has soured our experience with this restaurant and it will be a long time before we go back, if ever. For a matter of 25 or 50 cents worth of ice cream, they have lost 100's of dollars worth of business from us. In this slow economy, it doesn't make sense to us if you're trying to retain customers. If we misunderstood the waitress somehow, we would like to know, but that is what she said. Sorry, we have all lost out.
