I've been getting my hair cut here for about 10 years now. The shop is slightly down-at-the-heels, but very comfortable, and the prices are quite reasonable (as I recall, $17 before tip the last time I was in, but of course this can change). As a guy, I feel much more comfortable dropping in here than in one of the trendoid places.######I have very unruly, hard-to-cut hair, and I'm pretty satisfied with the look I get here. Results vary substantially from barber to barber; I have a favorite, and occasionally (depending on turnover) 1 or 2 I will avoid. ######They don't do appointments per se; walk in the door, and put your name (first names will do nicely, thanks) on the blackboard. If it's a longish wait, you can wander off to one of the nearby coffee shops, then get back in time. If you're a very reliable customer, you might be able to call from work, have them put your name on the blackboard, and arrive in time to drop into the chair.
