With concerts, educational programs, exhibits from notable artists, and valuable collections of African artifacts, Seacoast African American Cultural Center has become the hub of activity to showcase the contributions of individuals of African descent in the seacoast community. SAACC was founded by Vernis Jackson, a former Teacher, who saw a need for an organization which would increase the visibility of the rich African-American culture that exists here in New England. Recognizing this need, and with a coalition of members of various organizations in the area, SAACC was launched in 2000. The mission of Seacoast African American Cultural Center is to celebrate the lives and achievements of black people, with emphasis on the unique story of African Americans in the Seacoast, and to infuse young people with an appreciation of their history and culture. SAACC has collaborated with educational institutions such as the Portsmouth Schools and other area school systems, the University of New Hampshire, McIntosh College, and with organizations and individuals including The Portsmouth Music Hall, the Currier Museum, local artists, poets and musicians to present a vast array of exhibits and concerts at the Center. Our hope is that exposure to African American history not only informs, but will give ALL people an appreciation of our history and culture.
