Before I was assigned to the Norfolk and Portsmouth area, my wife and I reviewed the military health care options in the area and saw mixed reviews for Portsmouth Naval Hospital. I've only had to go there once thus far, but my experience was fantastic. I had to use the emergency room for what I thought was a 1 week bout with flu. But after a week of a high fever I reluctantly let my wife take me to the ER. The entire staff was professional and friendly. They saw me right away and got me a chest x-ray to determine I had pneumonia. Within 1.5 hrs I was released with meds in hand. Staff was courteous, place clean, and care was good.

I had my youngest daughter there in 1975, I had complications after the natural birth. The doctors were great and the nurses were out of this world! It was really busy, a lot of babies were born and mothers in labor. They were screaming and yelling they were in pain, I was in a lot of pain but did not want to bother the busy nurses. I had been given meds to give me labor so I could open and close naturally it was very painful. After a day of these complaint women and just prior to going off shift, the nurse came to my room, she stood in the door and spoke loud enough for the floor to hear, " you need pain meds, you haven't asked all day because you didn't want to bother us, well let me say this, you had problems and I know you are in pain, not like these other women crying pain meds, half of them don't need it they are whimps, you do so you'd better ask from now on". It was really quiet after that, maybe a yell now and then but nothing like it was. That was great.
