Organized in 1877, the Pottsville Fire Department works to serve more than 16,500 citizens living in an area of over 10 square miles. It operates more than five independent volunteer companies. The department houses a fleet of engines, aerial trucks, reserve pumpers, and utility and heavy rescue vehicles. The Pottsville Fire Department has a fire prevention division that offers information regarding smoke detectors, carbon monoxide, fire extinguishers and emergency escape planning.
