Personal. Daniel Contelmo Architects understands that for a design to be successful, it has to work for the clients on a daily basis. Dan gets to know his clients and learns their life patterns to produce a home that provides room for family gatherings and personal reflection. With his talent for listening to clients’ needs and envisioning unique solutions, Dan designs homes that describe their inhabitants: who they are and how they want to live. Ultimately, Dan’s goal is that his clients feel proud of their home; a space that is the result of their interaction with the architect, each other, and their surroundings. Every detail is designed to improve their lifestyle through function and beauty.

Traditional. Many of the firm’s projects involve renovating homes and designing suitable additions. Daniel Contelmo Architects is sensitive to the existing structure; they research traditional styles, when necessary, to maintain the authenticity of the home. Drawing from appropriate historic styles, the firm creates an enhanced version of the original house – additions give the illusion that they have always been there, or a progression of structures suggests that they could have been built over time. Whether a new construction or an addition, each design tells a story.

Timeless. Architecture reflects the attitudes of the times and Daniel Contelmo Architects feels responsible for making each home representative of their clients as well as the current culture. Over the course of time, houses change hands; the firm would like their homes to become historic, whether because they are representative of the current era, or because they have historic roots that have been restored and enhanced. Each home is carefully crafted and exceptionally constructed, as beautiful in one hundred years as it is today.

Sustainable. For Daniel Contelmo Architects, sustainable design is inherent to the firm. They strive to use the best materials available, both natural and long-lasting. Reusing materials, while saving money and reducing waste, is also one of the best ways to reflect the history and evolution of the home. The firm is conscientious about using local resources as well, which supports the local economy, reduces fuel consumption, and ties the home’s design to the neighboring surroundings.

Instinctive. Dan Contelmo benefits from an inherent artistic talent and a gift for listening and observation. He applies these skills to his designs by responding to the client, the landscape, and the local vernacular. Clients need not be well versed in design to achieve their goals; Dan takes pride in deciphering their desires and how to design a practical and attractive home that will exceed their aspirations in the present and in the future.

My husband and I built our house in 1998 without the help of an architect and regretted it. We were introduced to Dan by a builder and he was able to transform our exterior to include details from shingle style homes that I love. He designed a beautiful and functional portico that could be accessed through a set of french doors from our second floor, creating an outside living space that capitalizes on a view of the Hudson Valley and Catskill mountains. We were so happy that we hired him again to help further transform our exterior, re-work our foyer, and design a bedroom for our son. We are thrilled with our results and love to hear the reactions of family and friends. Dan is very talented, a team player, and conscientious of the needs of his clients. I feel comfortable putting my house in his hands and will continue to refer him every chance I get.
