Dorcas Place Adult & Family Learning Center, founded in 1981, serves the educational needs of children from low-income families in Rhode Island through literacy, workplace training, college preparatory programs and employment. Dorcas Place provides a comprehensive range of education programs and related services designed to fully support students in meeting their goals in relation to the adult roles of family member, worker and citizen. The students' reading levels range from beginning readers to those who are transitioning into college and English as a second language is taught for beginning, intermediate and advanced students. It also provides instruction in reading, writing, math and computer literacy in a classroom setting. Its Bridge-to-College program offers low-income, first-generation adults an opportunity to take a tuition-free one-semester class at the Community College of Rhode Island, as a starting point for a college career.
