Established in 1902, the Bureau of Reclamation specializes in the management of constructed dams, power plants and canals in more than 15 U.S. states. It is one of the largest producers of hydroelectric power in the western United States. The organization manages power plants annually and provides over 40 billion kilowatt of electricity to serve nearly 6 million homes. It has constructed approximately 600 dams and reservoirs, including Hoover Dam on the Colorado River and Grand Coulee on the Columbia River. The Bureau of Reclamation maintains operations in Colorado, Utah and California. It is a part of the U.S. Department of the Interior, which is a decentralized agency that employs a work force of more than 67,000 people. The U.S. Department of the Interior operates over 2,000 locations across the U.S. and Puerto Rico.
