The Business & Technology Center ( BTC ) is a small business incubator. It helps new and growing companies to be successful by providing valuable support services in a professional office environment. Business incubation is a business support process that accelerates the successful development of start-up and fledging companies by providing an array of targeted resources and services. The building located at 301 North Main Street was constructed in 1930 and was designed by famed architect George R. Mackay for the national chain of five-and-dime stores owned by Samuel H. Kress. The successful retail business maintained its presence in the downtown location until the late 1970's when a corporate decision was handed down to close its doors. In 1983, The Pueblo Economic Development Corporation, ( PEDCO ), took over the ownership of the building as well as the responsibility of a massive interior remodel project. In 1984, the building opened its doors once again as Colorado's first incubator for small businesses, offering premier office space to small or start-up companies.
