Awakenings Counseling for Couples and Sex Therapy was founded by Laurie Watson, popular author of Wanting Sex Again, (Berkley Imprints, 2012) marriage counselor, and certified sex therapist. Relationships need love and sex to be happy but often couples are in a power struggle over just these two important needs. For instance, one partner says "Talk to me so I can feel secure enough to be vulnerable having sex with you and the other says "Have sex with me and so I’ll feel safe talking to you.” Often, one spouse feels starved and neglected and the other feels controlled and crowded. If you think you are with or married a "selfish" person, then by definition, you are in the midst of a power struggle. Unfortunately, most couples wait 6 years before getting help when relationship therapy could bring them happiness and connection again. All our therapists at Awakenings are skilled with couple’s dynamics and don’t take sides. We are comfortable talking about difficult subjects and offer sex therapy (talk therapy – no nudity, exams or sexual touching with the therapist) for issues of low libido and frequency arguments, as well as specific sexual dysfunctions like: lack of orgasm, erectile dysfunction, and premature ejaculation. As fully licensed therapists, we also treat individuals, families and adolescents for issues of depression, anxiety, panic attacks, work stress, dating decisions, and premarital counseling with the scientifically researched attachment theory using exercises from Sue Johnson’s emotionally-focused training (EFT) and Gottman’s training.
