Battlefield Farms was built in 1982, as a co-generation facility to hydroponically produce lettuce. It was originally six-and-a-half acres and was located here in rural Virginia to take advantage of waste heat generated by a natural gas pumping station located down the hill. The hydroponic facility was closed down, gutted by an interim owner and converted into a bedding plant/poinsettia range that operated six months out of the year. The greenhouse was purchased in 1990, and was taken from the property with marginal financial status to an automated facility that produces a diverse product line year-round. Battlefield Farms has more than 20 acres of covered production area and nearly 10 acres of outside production area. The covered acreage is 14 acres of glass greenhouse and 10 acres of double poly greenhouses. Its outside production area is nearly five acres of drip irrigation and six acres of ebb and flood floors.
