Avram Abramowitz, MD, is a medical oncologist/hematologist at Northwell Health Queens Medical Associates. He manages all types of cancer using personalized treatment plans consisting of chemotherapy, immunotherapy and targeted therapy. His specialties include blood cancers such a leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma, and genitourinary malignancies, including prostate, bladder, and kidney cancers. He also treats benign hematologic conditions, including anemia and blood clotting disorders. Fluent in both English and Spanish, Dr. Abramowitz values offering people culturally competent care. “I make sure my patients understand they are important and take the time to thoroughly explain their diagnosis and treatment, while taking their values and social needs into account,” he says. Dr. Abramowitz earned his medical degree from New York Medical College and completed a residency in internal medicine at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital. “During my residency, I met an oncologist who had such meaningful relationships with patients that it inspired me to pursue this specialty,” he says. Dr. Abramowitz went on to obtain fellowship training in hematology-oncology at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital and completed a fellowship in neoplastic disease and bone marrow transplant at Mount Sinai Hospital. He has practiced medicine in Manhattan and Queens for more than three decades. At Northwell Health, Dr. Abramowitz uses a team-based approach to care. He collaborates with pathologists, imaging specialists, surgical oncologists and radiation oncologists to achieve the best possible outcomes. “I like being a medical oncologist because we tend to coordinate the overall treatment plan and have long-lasting relationships with patients,” he said. “I see patients for their ongoing follow-up care.” Dr. Abramowitz is involved in conducting clinical trials in prostate cancer and speaks at annual conferences on genitourinary malignancies. He is a member of the American Society of Hematology and the American Society of Clinical Oncology and an assistant professor at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. He has been a Castle Connolly Top Doctor, Metro New York area (digital guide) a Super Doctor in The New York Times Magazine for more than 10 consecutive years. For Dr. Abramowitz, the best part of his work is taking the time to get to know each one of his patients. “I enjoy making sure people feel supported,” he says. “I make sure the strange and unknown become familiar and understood, so people feel comfortable moving forward with their care.”
