After having a volunteer fire department for more than 40 years, Richmond, Ind., started its professional fire department in 1872. The Richmond Fire Department is made up of six stations manned by more than 80 firefighters working in three shifts. In 2005, the department responded to more than 4,000 calls within its 62-square-mile coverage area. It maintains six engine companies, one rescue company, one 100-foot aerial company, two grassfire units and one water rescue unit. The Richmond Fire Department provides a variety services, including fire suppression, first responder medical services, code enforcement, auto extraction, swift water rescue, dive team services, inspections and arson investigations, hazardous material decontamination and public education.
