Provided by YP.comWe just moved to the area & recommended to this clinic for our pets care (2 dogs & 2 cats). The front desk staff was RUDE - acted like it was a big deal to accept new patients especially our poodle who has anti-Cushing disease & requires a special medication. I'll keep searching for a better veterinary clinic - fortunely, I took the precaution of having all the pets updated on their physicals & shots before we moved. I'll pay the extra cost from our vet in MN for our poodle's medication - it's worth the price of not having to pay for RUDENESS!!

Provided by YP.comPlease be aware, on 7/13/16, this clinic put a parvo positive dog in the same room as my dog who we have been aggressively treating for kidney failure and is immunocompromised. I questioned the staff 3 times asking them if the dog had parvo and was told repeatedly it was only a bacterial infection. After an hour the dog's owners came in to visit and THEY told me she tested positive the night before by Dr. Abernathy.
Please share with Rio Rancho and Albuquerque.
Dr. Abernathy has been my vet for 8 years. Last year I had my labs teeth cleaned and they left a 6 inch plastic breathing tube in his throat which he threw up 2 days later but he blamed a tech and I wanted to trust him.
After this, it is my belief that if these two egregious mistakes happened, it must be prevalent.

Provided by YP.comI had a good experience with this clinic and staff. There are a lot of bad reviews, which could be a case by case scenario.

Provided by YP.comWe have been taking our dogs there for 20+ years. Dr. Abernathy is the most compassionate and kind vet in NM! He has a genuine concern for animals. I understand the frustration with the staff as they are overwhelmed but it's a small price to pay for the comfort and care my dogs get.

Provided by YP.comI am convinced Sunrise pays people to write good reviews on google. Their google reviews are phenomenal but elsewhere they are not so great. I have experienced first hand Sunrise's unprofessionalism and Abernathy's perverted demeanor. BEWARE.

Provided by YP.comHUMILIATING EXPERIENCE! I agree with other reviews who have said Abernathy is perverted. Unprofessional.

Provided by YP.comDo NOT use Sunrise! Unless of course you want your animals to die. My girlfriends family is devastated after their dog was neglected and left to die.

Provided by YP.comGO ELSEWHERE. Sunrise Veterinary Clinic may be cheap but do not let your pets pay the price. One of my dogs is now dead and another nearly died thanks to Sunrise and Dr. Abernathy. If you want false diagnoses and your animals to be unattended to, go pay them a visit.
Last week I suspected both dogs kennel cough had turned into pneumonia. When I mentioned this to Dr. Abernathy he insisted the dogs kennel cough was not to the point of pneumonia. Both dogs ended up being admitted to Sunrise and when my daughters and I went to check on them neither were getting oxygen. The youngest dog was in an oxygen chamber with it oxygen TURNED OFF and the other dog was not in an oxygen chamber at all when her gums were white and breathing extremely rapid.
The vet techs told us that they could not adjust the oxygen chamber and needed Dr. Abernathy to do it himself. The vet tech said that Dr. Abernathy was technically in the building but was not seeing patients until 6pm because he needed to deal with some computer issues he was having. We politely asked again if we could quickly speak to Dr. Abernathy because time was running out for both dogs and they needed oxygen and fluids ASAP. Several minutes later, a vet tech came over to us and I assumed Sunrise was finally going to help our suffering dogs. Instead, Dr. Abernathy had his vet tech KICK US OUT. The vet tech told us we were being “disruptive” and that we were banned from Sunrise.
Dr. Abernathy was embarrassed by his incompetence and figured he did not have to take responsibility if he kicked us out. Had Dr. Abernathy correctly diagnosed our dogs in the first place and turned ON the oxygen in the chamber our youngest dog would be alive. We headed to Petroglyph Animal Clinic after leaving and both dogs were immediately diagnosed with pneumonia. They were provided stronger medication, oxygen chambers, IVs, and nebulizers. However, the youngest dog was already too far gone and malnourished due to Sunrise's incompetence.

Provided by YP.comDr. Abernathy needs to retire. During my visits for at least the past two years, each visit with my car are spent watching the doctor doze off.. While standing! When I ask why he hasn't retired, he responds that he has too many bills!
Now I am now facing the death of my elderly cat because Dr. Abernathy told me to give him a Baby Aspirin, allowing 72 hours between doses for hip pain. Trusting the doctor, I gave my cat 1 baby aspirin and allowed an extra day before the second aspirin. One week later and my cat is tragically and heartbreakingly dying. I have checked on Dr Abernathy's suggestion....My cat should have only been prescribed 1/4 Tablet every 72 hours! I am with my cat at his side now, crying and feeling helpless. I cannot be the only person who has experienced similar issues. Feel free to write me at [email protected]
Thank you

Provided by YP.comI have been taking all my many pets (retired racing greyhounds and numerous cats) to Sunrise Vet for 15 years. Although the place can at times be a "madhouse" , very crowded and backed up appointment times, I just accept it and chat with other clients. I have read reviews by others who feel the staff is rude - I think they are just stressfully busy and when I engage them in light banter they are quite friendly. Phone situation is not good but I get fast responses when I send an email; otherwise I just leave a message and let them get back to me. I do think they would do well to bring on another vet - Dr. Abernathy is SO dedicated to the pets he has often called me as late as 10:30pm to give me an update. I recommend this clinic but do caution you need to be patient.

Provided by YP.comI took my fur baby, on 8-19-2016 for cherry eye removal. I was so happy with the results and my little boy has never looked so good! Thank you, Doctor, for caring so much for our babies! I can't wait to let all my friends know about this wonderful little heaven.

Provided by YP.comFront office staff not friendly. They all seem confused about what to do. Phone service awful. Put on hold three times today, and no one answered after 12 minutes on my last try.

Provided by YPmobileLove the staff and I wouldn't trust my babies with no one else but sunrise vet. They are professional experienced and treat my babies like their own. Dr Abernathy is the best veterinarian in Albuquerque Rio rancho area. Highly recommend sunrise to everyone.

Provided by YP.comIf you care for assembly line vet care this is the place to go. Called the office to inform them I had a wild duck with a broken leg and was informed that I should bring him in immediately. Rushed her over only to be informed I had to leave her there because Dr. Abernathy was to busy to see her. Then got a call he wanted to keep her there for five days in a cage. I had the duck in a cage at home. Never got to talk to him to inform him the duck had broken her leg 8 months ago. Never got to ask him why he wanted her on antibiotics. Never got to ask him if the leg could be treated. Cause when I went to pick up the duck and asked questions to his staff they could not answer me. He of cause was not there. So, I got this huge bill without any explanation of how this wild bird could be treated. Just a bottle of pills without any explanation on how to give a duck a pill. Then I got banned from his office without any conversation with him. He tells a friend of mine he does not want me in his office. Thanks, a lot, Dr. Abernathy. This is after giving you thousands of dollars after you miss diagnosed my dog.

Poor experience overall. Find a different vet. Indifferent and unfriendly staff both in person and on the phone. They act like you're bothering them. Keep you on hold forever hoping that you'll give up and hang up. Grossly overcharge for common antibiotic that you can buy at Walmart for $7. Charge $5 just for writing a prescription. DO NOT USE THIS VET. If they don't care about the pet owners how can they care about the animals?

I worked with Dr. Abernathy at a vet hospital years ago, who had me fired because I told him to keep his hands off of me after he kept trying to massage my shoulders when I was working. Got a call six months later from another girl who said this had happened to several others. Never received an apology from the clinic owners, and didn't know enough at the time to pursue with a law suit, but it haunts me to this day. I loved that job. He also thought it was funny to breed two six-toed cats together to see what would happen, and ended up with a"kangaroo" cat, with non-functioning front legs. Not funny at all.

I had been taking my pets there for years at first it was good but as the years went by it got busier and busier and more and more incompitent. My last visit I took my dog in to see Dr. Abernathy and he told me there was nothing to be done and to just get over it and realize I had to put the dog to sleep. That didn't sit right with me so I found another vet who promptly told me that yes my dog would die from complications of the disease he had one day but that there was plenty that could be done to help him and still maintain the happy jolly quality of life he had always lived. They saved my dogs life when Dr. Abernathy simply wanted to kill him. Thanks to my decision to get a second opinion my dog lived another 5 years a happy little guy enjoying life. For another story on why you should NEVER see this vet please see my review on google.

Dr. Abernathy is great! He is very compassionate and takes his time. Prices are very reasonable, and if something comes up they are willing to work with you. I would not consider taking my dog anywhere else. We had an emergency with our dog and he was seen within 45 mins, it was great! Normal waiting times are sometimes longer but its only because they dont rush anyone out of there..and they make sure all your pets needs are made! I am really glad I choose this clinic for my puppy!
