In the late 1980's and early 1990's, Riverside County experienced unprecedented growth and development. The resulting population increase and corresponding land-use activities crowded into the County's remaining open spaces and threatened to eliminate the native landscapes that first attracted newcomers to the region. The Riverside Land Conservancy was founded in 1988 in response to this critical need for a local community organization dedicated to the conservation of open space and natural areas. Since its beginnings, primary emphasis for its activities has been placed on lands that link ecological preserves, parks and other wildlife refuges, conserve riparian habitats, or protect significant agricultural resources in Riverside County. Over time, the Conservancy has also become involved in conservation in other inland Southern California counties. Since 1988 RLC has conserved over 10, 000 acres through land purchases, donations and land use restrictions on fragile natural landscapes.
