Rick Seidel graduated from Duke University with a double major of psychology and economics. He graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. Dr. Seidel went on to graduate school in clinical psychology at the University of Virginia. He received his doctorate in May 1988, and subsequently completed an internship in clinical psychology at the Palo Alto V.A. Medical Center. He became the recipient of the first postdoctoral fellowship awarded by the Palo Alto V.A., and spent the year working with veterans with addiction issues. He then became the clinical director of the first PTSD/alcohol program in the country. The success of this program prompted funding for additional programs. In the early 1990s, Dr. Seidel was recruited to come to Roanoke to develop a clinical program for the inpatient psychiatric service, as well as to provide teaching for residents, fellows, and students. In 2020, Dr. Seidel stepped away from his role as an administrator and returned to primarily providing direct clinical care to outpatients.
