William S. Rea, M.D., serves as Fellowship Director for Addiction Medicine at Carilion Clinic and a Professor at Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. With over 30 years of experience, his specialty area is diagnosis and treatment of substance use disorders. He developed an innovative program to treat patients whose opioid or stimulant injection resulted in severe septic complications like endocarditis or osteomyelitis. Dr. Rea has been involved in medical education throughout the career continuum. Currently Board-certified in Addiction Medicine and General Psychiatry, he has established both Addiction Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine fellowships and won the University of Virginia Mulholland Award for student education for ten consecutive years. He has served for several years on the mid-Atlantic task force for addiction education with representatives from SAMHSA, other medical education leaders and is on the planning committee of the annual S. Hughes Melton Interdisciplinary Summit on Addiction Education.
