The Minnesota Department of Transportation s District 6 supports the transportation network of southeastern Minnesota. The district operates more than 20 truck stations and has a staff of over 400 employees. It manages the efficiency and safety of nearly 1,400 miles of state roadway and approximately 130 miles of navigable rivers. The Minnesota Department of Transportation s District 6 also manages bridges, airports, and railway and transit systems. The district is a part of The Minnesota Department of Transportation, which was created by the State Legislature in 1976. The department develops and implements policies, plans and programs for highways, ports, public transit systems and railroads.
