Dr. Maria Saavedra obtained her PhD in clinical psychology at the University of Rochester’s Clinical and Social Psychology Department where she wrote her dissertation on how different behaviors like mindfulness and physical affection impact relationship satisfaction. She also taught a psychology of relationships class at the University of Rochester and continues to engage in outreach in the community about what psychology research tells us about relationships. Throughout her career, she has been deeply interested in and inspired by the power of close, healthy relationships (both platonic and romantic) to effect change, improve mental health, and bring joy to people’s lives. Given her focus on relationships, her approach to therapy often involves examining current patterns in relationships and looking for possible ways those patterns may be hurting individuals or those they care about. She also works with families and couples to help people have the opportunity for deep, honest, and meaningful communication and learn skills that they can take with them outside of the therapy room.
