I've used A-1 Video Awareness for nearly ten years and have always received excellent and thorough service -- whether getting old 8mm home movies transferred to DVD, or having my audio and video equipment serviced (they've repaired items that other shops claimed weren't fixable) , or buying refurbished audio and video equipment. I've found that if there is a problem, they do everything they can to make it right. The $35, as a big sign says over their intake counter explains, is a fee to troubleshoot the problem and provide a repair estimate. You pay it upfront, but they will apply the estimate fee towards the repair, should you decide to have the item repaired. If you don't want the item repaired, your $35 is nonrefundable, because it paid for the estimate (which was provided to you, as promised). This is fairly normal policy in repair shops of all kinds. I don't know of any other service facilities that can afford to do FREE repair estimates on sophisticated audio and video equipment.

Very customer unfriendly! Collected $35 fee IN ADVANCE to fix my VCR, failed to do so. Took a lot of time to even look at machine. Would not refund my fee or credit it towards reconditioned VCR. A MUST to AVOID!!
