Arsenal Island Golf Course
1838 Gillespie Ave, Rock Island, IL 61201
Encompassing 18 holes, Rock Island Arsenal Golf Club is nestled on an island surrounded by the Mississippi River in Rock Island, Ill. The fairways are narrow and the greens are medium in speed and size. With a long and illustrious history, the Rock Island Arsenal was officially established during the Civil War in 1862. In 1897, Colonel Stanhope E. Blunt, commanding officer of the arsenal, convinced the government that a portion of the grounds on the island were not needed by the war department. He had a five-hole golf course constructed in the area. The colonel invited a group of his friends to the Island to partake in this new game of golf. An article in The Moline Daily Dispatch in July 1897 states, There is a prospect that a taste for this type of open-air sport may become, in some degree, popular among the people in this part of the country.
