Mitch Spicer, owner of “Spicer’s Automotive and 4 Wheel Drive.” just passed away.
I’m not good at writing Eulogies. However, at the very least, I can write a review of the man and his business that I’ve known since 1999.
Before I did business with Spicer’s, I was using a nationwide chain of shops. When I have a trusted mechanic, the DIY part of me gets shelved. When the mechanic was finished, he said I had a dead cylinder. This was terrible news, but the expert has spoken and there was no reason to doubt his word. I nursed my injured baby back home. From a neighbor, I heard that Mitch Spicer was a Mopar fan as well. So why not try him? Well, on my very first visit, he made a very good first impression. That other mechanic? The expert? Mitch discovered he installed spark plugs with the wrong heat range. Waaaaaaay wrong, by about 6 numbers (of the same brand). Next time I went to Atlanta, I stopped by that shop. The mechanic insisted that his choice of part was specified and graciously showed me the spec sheet. He was right. That is, according to the documentation they had. So, it’s not that they were totally incompetent, but it was clear they were simply not able to provide the same service as they did in the past. For whatever reason, they lost the talent and experience to work on our nation’s aging fleet of classic American Iron. Further, I subsequently found that some shops won’t work on older vehicles. Typically earlier than 1980.
Spicer’s has the experience, knowledge, and excellent business ethics that spans several years. They’re capable and comfortable working on all makes and models, from all eras. This is in addition to their specialties in 4 wheel drive, vintage auto work, and an impressive racing history as well. It started with a strong foundation of Mitch’s education in the 70’s. He graduated with honors from Dalton State College, formally known as Dalton Junior College with a degree in Diesel and Automotive Mechanics. This I found out on my own as he never bragged about it. The business grew form there. This knowledge and experience he gained over the years didn’t go with him to the beyond. For those employees who remain dedicated and the surviving generation of Spicer’s, this legacy is passed on. Of course, the boys have some very big shoes to fill but I’m sure they will. Through them, it’s my hope that Spicer’s legacy continues. Now, I’m in California, but remain a loyal, long distance customer with both my Mopars in their capable hands.
