GlycoMimetics develops novel small molecule therapeutics based upon the roles that carbohydrates play in biological processes. The company believes that carbohydrate mimics, or glycomimetic compounds, represent a new class of drugs. It has identified some compounds with potential therapeutic utility. One class has potential in the treatment of infectious diseases with a novel mechanism of action; the second is a class of anti-inflammatory compounds that have been shown to reduce key measures of inflammation. One of GMI s lead opportunities is to treat or prevent infections caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Its objective in this program is to develop a drug that would be used in conjunction with antibiotics against chronic infections that have failed to respond to antibiotic treatment. The company also has compounds that inhibit selectin binding.
