The Watsonville Berry Co-op began in 1954 when California strawberry growers came together to start their own market. The cooperative is composed of more than 25 ranches of strawberry and raspberry growers marketed under the Berry Bowl label. The Watsonville Berry Co-op is a northern California organization with most of the growers in and around Watsonville. Each farmer is independent, and each farmer maintains an average of 25 acres. Raspberries are sold by the ounce and strawberries are sold in one-pound, two-pound and four-pound containers. Berries are cooled, stored and sold at the Watsonville Berry Cooler, which opened in 1984.
