Founded in 1981, Defense Microelectronics Activity is a microelectronics engineering, design, prototyping, testing and processing unit. It serves the Department of Defense and assists the U.S. Air Force. The unit is also involved in applied research and development programs and supports nonmilitary organizations, such as the National Atmospheric and Oceanic Administration, the Department of Energy and Department of Justice, as well as various universities and commercial companies. Additionally, Defense Microelectronics Activity produces microelectronics parts for various types of weapons and maintains a laboratory for conducting tests. The unit, also known as DMEA, helps in resolving the technological issues of weapon systems. It employs a staff of more than 100 engineering and support specialists who design and develop analog, digital and mixed-signal integrated circuits and module chips. With one of its locations in Sacramento, Calif., Defense Microelectronics Activity additionally provides liaison services to commercial contractors.
