The California State Lands Commission, governed by the States of California, was established in 1938. The agency has a staff of more than 200 individuals. Its mineral resources division has expertise in the areas of petroleum engineering, geology, resource economics, mining and leasing. The California State Lands Commission offers oil spill prevention and environmental management programs. The agency additionally issues leases or permits on state land for several purposes, including grazing, dredging sand mining.
