My dog got out last night after someone opened our gate and he was let out to go to the restroom. . This morning, I called the pound to see if indeed they had him. I was told that he was hit by a car, in pain and that they were going to euthanize him this afternoon. I immediately left work to go pick up my furry family friend. Upon taking him to the vet it was found that he had a dislocated hip and a hairline fracture in his front paw. There was no reason for him to be euthanized. They (the shelter) also told me that black labs were put down the most because "they were not popular in this area". I find that statement to be so untrue. Labs are the most popular dog breed in the US and are known to be great family pets. I am grateful that they had my dog, but am concerned at their lack of resources and their abundance of animals. They need far more support than what I witnessed at this shelter.

On Aug. 2, 2013, some strangers drove a bulldozer through our property to get to the backyard of the neighbor next door to do construction work. Our dogs were tethered in our backyard when I left for work, but the female dog must have tugged so hard that her collar loosened and she slipped out. The dog then nipped at the man's pant leg of the jeans he was wearing...NO INJURY occurred. He even said he was not filing charges...it was no big deal. The dog warden, Verna Painter, called my 14 yr-old daughter on her cell phone and told her that she was going to have the Sheriff shoot her dog! (She is trying to deny this, even though I have several witnesses and the call is recorded on my cell phone bill. Verna has even changed her cell number in an attempt to cover this up!) My daughter was absolutely hysterical and afraid to come home because she thought she was going to have to watch her dog being shot. She caught her dog (because the Dog Wardens couldn't), but Verna took the dog from her and said she had to quarantine her. Then she tried to take our other dog, who was still tethered in our yard for no reason! My son got between her and the dog and said she'd have to get past him, first, or she would have taken him. That was 27 days ago and Verna still refuses to give us back our female dog. I have researched ORC Chapter 955 and Verna has violated so many laws that I have lost count. I have filed numerous verbal and written complaints to the Belmont County Commissioners, but they haven't done a thing! I go to court tomorrow and I am reporting everything to the judge. I'd also like to start a petition addressed to the commissioners to fire these Dog Wardens and hire people who will follow the laws!!! And maybe do their job so that 4 yr olds, like the boy in Martins Ferry recently, are not bitten in the face by a stray rottweiler that the Dog Wardens refused to pick up! My elder daughter and her co-workers witnessed a moving SUV throw puppies from the window on SR 250 in Pleasant Grove...one got run over, 2 were captured and 1 was running loose for months and the Animal Shelter wouldn't answer their phone and when they did, they refused to come out to rescue the abandoned puppy, so my daughter and her co-workers fed and rescued him and found him a home. I had a dog whose owners ALLOWED him to run free come into my yard and violently kill a poodle-maltese dog that was our family pet that was tethered to a tree and the Dog Wardens did nothing! I've had 2 black labs owned by people behind my house, who were allowed to run free, come into our yard and literally skin alive 2 sets of pet bunnies and the Dog Wardens did NOTHING! My children and I were not able to enter our home a while back because a vicious, stray dog was standing on our front porch lunging at us and showing his teeth and the Dog Wardens didn't answer the call. Where is the justice???

I've been a tax-paying resident of Belmont County since 1980 and I resent having my tax dollars pay the salaries of Dog Wardens and Commissioners who are not doing their job! If the Commissioners can't supervise the Dog Wardens, vote them out!

Is anyone who is aware of illegal actions of the Dog Wardens or who has been treated in a manner which violates ORC Chapter 955 interested in a class action lawsuit? Will anyone help me get signatures on a petition to fire the current Dog Wardens if I start it? I have had nothing but NEGATIVE experiences with this animal shelter and I have heard nothing but NEGATIVE comments and stories from everyone I know. My star rating is -100 stars.

First of all, Let me say this. Belmont County Animal Rescue League and shelter are the same business. Second they are operating as a not for profit business, NOT a humane society. In that information can be obtained at the court house, They have no legal rights to appoint humane agents or dog wardens, with this said when you operate as a 1702 which is not a humane society, you are illegally obtaining peoples animals and selling them or putting them to sleep for your on profit. In order to be legal you must operate as a non profit 1717 which you are not doing! You will be shut down for all the fraudulent conduct you have been doing. I am surprised that no one else will step forward, especially when one of the so called dog wardens drowned kittens in a 5 gallon bucket, her reasoning was we don't have the time or the workers to take care of these kittens and know one will know about it anyway. I think they need to be shut down for the filth that is in that shelter and fire all the so called workers that are there!
