The Book House has been open since 1985 as an open shop and an online store under the ownership of Michelle Barron and her family. We are located in a charming historic Victorian house built in 1865. We are about 15 minutes from downtown St. Louis where an eclectic mix of quality rare, out of print, new, and used books are tucked into nine rooms on three floors of winding staircases filled with nooks and crannies, and a dungeon we call the 'bargain basement'. Our house is patrolled by two store cats, Chaucer and Blake, as well as one ghost. Our extensive used, rare, and out of print holdings have been collected for years, and represent some of the finest in the Midwest. We have wonderful selections of children's and illustrated books, 19th and 20th century literature, poetry, drama, military history, art, architecture, and photography. Our science fiction, cookbook, philosophy, religion, and mystery collections are huge. A portion of our proceeds now support Second Chapter Life Cen ter, a non-profit supporting young adults with special needs and their families.

A Rare Place To Encounter Some of Our Lost Literary Heroes

The Bookhouse is a rare treasure not just for St. Louis, but the kind of book store that's disappearing across America. Three stories in an antiquated home...filed with every kind of story imaginable. Each room is neatly organized by subject. You'll find everything from old, odd and rare to new, popular and common books. Hardcovers and softcovers. Collectible and reader's copies. The staff is friendly and helpful. The prices are right...in my experience they'll even work with you if you're buying more than one title. Most of all, it's the place where you'll discover books that you didn't know you were looking for...something the Internet will never be able to do for you. Highly recommended.

We began selling used and rare books, but The Book House has evolved to carry a wide selection of new and front list books. We work with distributors, publishers, and authors to carry an eclectic selection of new books, small press, self published, and limited editions as well as most of the Independent Book Sellers Book Sense Picks. We have art, children's and adult literature, St. Louis, and Missouri items. WE CAN ORDER ANYTHING! We host book signings, book clubs, and events. Please check our calendar. Our over 35,000 books listed here are less than 10 of our stock. We buy buy hundreds of books each week and we will never have them all in the computer, so browse our listings or place an order or request through the secure shopping cart.
