I purchased a second hand 40 foot Tiara Offshore Express through Global Marine and Embree Marine were appointed to service both Cummins engines prior to the boat leaving the US.

The service included provision of new belts that drive the alternators and internal fresh water pump cooling of the engines.

After the service their was no sea trial with the mechanics on board the boat in order to check that all had been done correctly.

During the trip back to the Marina a bolt that tensioned one of the pulleys fractured and the subsequent catastrophic over heat of the port engine resulted in a cracked exhaust manifold, warped cylinder head and severely damaged turbo charger.

The damage and cost to repair by Southernmarine Power the local Cummins agent was in excess of 24,000 USD.

The bolt that had been loosened in order to replace the belt had been over tensioned and not set using a torque wrench to the required setting.

More importantly the bolt that had been used by Embree Mechanics was a not a genuine Cummins 'hardened' engine bolt with the required tensile strength number.

Also the belt was not fully aligned with the pulley and it required a shim to align correctly.

The bolts on both engines have now been replaced for the correct ones by the local Cummins agent Pro Yachts and shimmed to align correctly.

A full report has also been sent back to Cummins Marine U.S. with evidence that an incorrect none genuine part that has been over tensioned can result in such catastrophic damage.

Conclusion : Do not let Embrees marine mechanics loose on your engine. I paid a severe price for inadequate workmanship and lack of post service supervision and monitoring.

Comments from several marine surveyors and Cummins service agents state categorically that original parts should have been used and the running of both engines with new belts should have been monitored and sea trailed with the engine hatch open for safety and supervision.

I very much doubt that Embree's two mechanics had the correct qualifications and training to service Cummins diesel engines.

Had I lived in the US I would have had no hesitation issuing court action against this company.

Do not let these people loose on your boat engines ; you have been warned.!

Always use the main authorized agents even though this may cost more it's certainly cheaper in the long run.
