Research before donating

I used to donate to Northeast Animal Shelter. That was until I found out their no kill/ never kill mission was not true. As a donor and my experience as a consumer, I was deeply saddened to hear they actually did kill dogs in their care. When people donate to non profits, they read their mission statement. In my experience of donating my money, time, and tangible items it's expected that transparency is in their mission statement. My experience as a donor was disappointing at best.

In 2018, alone they killed five dogs, Abby, Rukia, Chewbacca, Dancer, and Duffy. Please do your research before donating. There are so many good shelters and rescues worthy of donations.

I have adopted 3 dogs from NAS and 2 cats. Sure you don’t always get the nicest and welcoming workers, but most of these people are volunteers. They are cleaning and caring for dogs and cats. Lots of dog owners don’t even want to pick up after their own dogs. So I am thankful for their help. I have seen many cases of people returning puppies, young dogs and cats because they didn’t expect to be that hard or because they moved and the new place doesn’t accept the animal. So yes, they ask for what I feel is basic documentation to insure the animal will be placed in a good home. I have tried to adopt from online rescues and they are way worse. They do not allow you to get a puppy if you have a kid younger than 5 years old and they will come to your house for a home study. NAS is one of the only places in this area that you can walk in and leave with an animal in hands.

I think these negative reviews are all a case of only the upset people write reviews. We have adopted 3 different dogs through NEAS on three different occasions and have always had great experiences there. These people are so nice, I cannot believe any of these reviews. Seriously! NEAS does great work, keeps an immaculate kennel, saves so many lives, and truly cares.

I have adopted a cat and a dog thorough NEAS and I have never had an issue. On their website they clearly state their adoption requirements and tell you to show up a few hours before closing to adopt. Everyone has been pleasant to me there. Most people don't understand that there are a lot of volunteers that work there, so you may get conflicting info b/c that's not their full time job. You have to understand that you can't always just PICK what animal you want to adopt, they have to see if you and your family and lifestyle would be a good match. It sounds like some of these reviewers are upset that they didn't get what they wanted at that instant. Wouldn't you rather them be through about animal adoptions? You wouldn't just hand over your pet to just anyone to pet-sit, would you? They have to get to know you and see how you interact with the animal before they give it to you for the rest of their lives. Both of my animals are so lovable and I can't imagine my life without them. I donate to NEAS regularly because they help so many animals and save them from being killed. I wish people could see the big picture and realize it just not about you.

IGNORANT

I VISITED THE NOTHEAST ANIMAL SHELTER RECENTLY TO ADOPT A CAT OR KITTEN! UNFORTUNETLY THE PERSON WHO APPEARS TO BE THE MANAGER AND MAKES THE FINAL DECISIONS ON THE ADOPTIONS (A MS. POTTER) WAS A COLD A VERY IGNORANT WOMAN!

HOW SHE ATTAINED THAT POSITION IS BEYOND ME!! I WOULD NOT RECOMEND THAT SHELTER TO A FRIEND OR ANYONE FOR THAT MATTER!!!

SINCERELY, JRP.

We were excited to get a new dog, unfortunately the experience was upsetting. After telling us there were no more adoptions for the day (which we were fine with) we were not even allowed to see the dog we were interested in. We were told yes and no multiple times by different people and eventually left. A woman named Anne was the only one saying no to us and several other families, her negative attitude and poor customer service lead to pets not having the opportunity to be adopted. We will not be returning to this shelter in the future.

Horrible experience, traveled several times from 2 hours away. To get denied, ALWAYS. Even though we were approved by our landlord, this lady kept making up excuses, looking for reasons to say we cannot have a pet. Lack of profesionalism, and courtesy.

My experience at Northeast Animal Shelter was absolutely less than expected. I was greeted by a nice elderly woman who was very willing to assist me in any and all my questions. However once I filled out my application I was approached by the most disrespectful woman. Upon meeting the volunteer Jean I was not only disrespected and ridiculed but judged upon my appearance. She was least helpful in every way and tried to give away the dog I was attempting to adopt to another family. Even worse she made it an inconvenience for me when she demanded to have any and all family members come down to meet for the adoption process. Currently I have two dogs who are happy and healthy and very much loved. Jean not only told me I was an unqualified parent but told me that she wouldn’t allow me to adopt the new dog , proceeded to call me a liar and attempted to deny my application. Upon the rude behavior I called my mother so I wouldn’t lose the dog. My mother and sister came down and demanded that she fill out a new adoption application but Jean had already put the blue tag on the other family’s application. The mother demanded we look at the dog then Jean finally gave it and said ok we can adopt him. This was such a difficult process, I would never adopt from them again. I will never recommend this shelter to anyone. I feel bad for the animals there, hope they are treated with respect unlike their customers.

My family and I are of Hispanic heritage. When my mother, sister, boyfriend (who is a marine), and I tried to adopt a cat. As soon as we walked in the greater was rude and picked us out of all the people in the lobby to ask why we were here and what we were doing very rudely. Then we we went to adopt a cat it was excuse after as to why we couldn't adopt him. We then asked for a list of this we would need so we could adopt him, and when we asked if this was all we needed they still said we possible couldn't get the cat. They called my family liars and disrespectful when we did nothing of such sort. Even if we had, the customer service was still way below what it should have been. These people are crazy. I didn't know to own a cat you had to go through hell and back. No cats will get homes this way. I highly recommend never going to this shelter.

I would tell my best friend no...

I would tell my best friend not to go to the NEAS On Highland Avenue in Salem because I had a stray cat that was black with white paws and injured show up in my families driveway a few days ago. After calling the Lynn MA Animal control and getting nowhere we put the stray cat in a box and brought it to NEAS. They turned us away and said they couldnt help and told me to bring it to the veternerians office down the street. However they said in order to get help for it that we would have to pay which we unfortunately could not afford. So back to NEAS we went the woman there with shirt brown straight hair told me there was nothingt she could do and would not even see if it had a microchip so the cat could be reunited with its owner. I thought since it was such a simple procedure that this was the cheapest easiest way for them to help the cat except the woman said she just ogt out of the hospital after touchng a stray that attacked her and that she was not doing it again. (Even though I thought that was part of her job since she is working in an animal shelter). After being turned away and getting frustrated with all of these so called RESCUE organizations and SHELTERS we came back home with the cat. My brother in law called around and just when we thought noone at all would want to rescue this cat he reached the Animal Rescue League In BOSTON MA. They were glad to help and rescue the cat and they even came to pick it up. I am grateful for them and this cat will be reunited with its family if they are able to locate them and if not then they will find it a nice loving home where they will not deny him medical care when it is injured and will not turn it away to suffer in someones driveway like the NEAS.

RUDE!!!! Cyndi Hudson RUDE and childish. Wish i could show you the email she sent! Disgusting! Would never adopt another pet there if YOU paid me. They pride their shelter on GREAT reviews, they must not read the bad ones and their are alot. Not just about the fees but the staff. Go some place else! There are BETTER shelters in Mass to give your money too.

I don't know who does the hiring, but there are some crazies working there. I wanted to look at a kitten and to see if we clicked. They wouldn't let me hold her...but they were willing to let me adopt her. It was so strange!! I have adopted 3 cats from this particular shelter and each time was a horrible experience. I try to support this shelter because it is in my city, but I cannot do so again.
