The Diabetes & Glandular Disease Clinic, P.A. (DGD) offers the best in treatment for hormonal and metabolic disorders such as type 1 and 2 diabetes, gestational diabetes, thyroid disease, osteoporosis, lipid disorders (high cholesterol), pituitary/adrenal gland problems, menstrual disorders and hirsutism (excessive facial hair on women). All our doctors are board-certified in Endocrinology & Metabolism, a sub-specialty of Internal Medicine. While Dr. Dreimane is board-certified in Endocrinology & Metabolism, she is a pediatric endocrinologist, also board-certified by the American Board of Pediatrics. The clinic was founded in June of 1979. Four years later, in June of 1983, the clinic was instrumental in establishing the Diabetes Centers of Excellence at what is now Methodist Specialty and Transplant Hospital. Under our physicians' guidance and direction, the Centers of Excellence received recognition from the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and was the only in-patient fac ility so recognized in South Texas. At this same time, the Diabetes & Glandular Disease Research Center was born and the clinic conducted its first clinical trial of an investigational new drug. Since then, we have conducted more than 500 such research trials. In April of 1993, the Diabetes Self-Management Training Center, commonly called the Education Center, was created. At present, the Education Center is recognized by the ADA and is the first of its kind so recognized in the state of Texas. We provide education for type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetics along with insulin adjustment and out-patient insulin pump training. DGD continues to be a leader in progressive use of the most current, state-of-the-art technologies and cutting-edge treatments. Because of this, the clinic has become internationally renowned for its care of patients with diabetes mellitus, as well as other endocrine disorders, and has remained one of the largest endocrinology clinics in South Texas.

My first couple of visits were great here but they have gone now hill with their customer service. If you care anything about having a reliable appointment time DO NOT GO HERE!!!!

They cancelled my follow up appointment and I was not able to make a new appointment at that time. I called back twice and was put on hold and hung up after 20 min. I decided to go in and make my appointment and was told I would have to sit and wait. I was told there were a lot of people in front of me and it would be about 20 min!!! Come on THEY cancelled my appointment!!! I have asked my PCP to refer me to a new endocrinologist.

Dr. Akhrass has always been a great doctor and I've been coming to the clinic for about ten years now. But times and the quality of care have changed. The wait times for scheduled appointments are usually 1-2 hours. So if you're scheduled to be seen at 2:00 pm, you can almost guarantee that you won't be seen till 3:00. It's become rather frustrating and I no longer feel like a patient but rather a number. This is now routine, I come in (30 mins ahead of time) have my labs and vitals done and just wait. The visit with the doctor is usually 15 minutes and I'm out the door with what I come for-scripts for medications that I cannot live without. BOTTOM LINE: If you're a new diabetic or suffer from a disorder that your family doctor cannot control, the DGD will probably be worth your while. If you're a controlled patient looking for routine check ups DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME.

  • What is the difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes? Type 1 diabetes, formerly called juvenile-onset diabetes, is an autoimmune disease in which the body makes little or no insulin. People with type 1 diabetes are required to take insulin in order to avoid ketoacidosis and death. Type 2 diabetes is a metabolic disorder which is typically diagnosed in people over the age of 30. Most people with type 2 are also overweight. People with type 2 diabetes may control their blood sugars with diet, exercise, oral medication or insulin if needed. What are the signs of diabetes? People with type 1 diabetes usually present with significant weight loss, increased thirst, and increased urination, very high blood sugars, and sometimes ketoacidosis. People with type 2 diabetes often have no symptoms at all or may notice fatigue, increased thirst and increased urination. Why is HbA1c important? An HbA1c is a blood test used to determine a person's average blood sugar over the previous 2-3 months. It gives a good indication of overall blood sugar control. The American Diabetes Association recommends HbA1c testing be done at least twice a year in patients who are meeting treatment goals and more frequently (quarterly) in patients whose therapy has changed or who are not reaching treatment goals. What are the risk factors for diabetes? Risk factors for diabetes include: family history, age, sex, obesity, and ethnic background. (Blacks, Hispanics, Asians, and American Indians all have a greater incidence of diabetes compared to Caucasians). What is a good blood sugar level? When taken fasting or before meals, your blood sugar should be between 80-120 mg/dl. Two hours after a meal, it should be less than 150 mg/dl. Before bedtime, your blood sugar should be between 100-140 mg/dl.
