Provided by YP.comAs long time Checkers customers, we were excited to try to new DeWeese Tip Top Cafe on Nacogdoches.
Complaint - We live very near the cafe & anxiously waited for some indication that they were open. We tried to visit twice, only to be met with a lot full of cars with parking cones blocking the entrance & exit. We almost didn't try a 3rd time. Why bother having a sign if you are not going to use it?
Complaint - Unlike Checker's, you "sign in" with the girl at the register, & then are forced to find a place against the wall to wait. There are four chairs against the wall of the entrance of the bathroom, (gross), & main entrance, where you are constantly in the way of the endless rotation of people coming in & out. Fortunately the vending machines have been removed. However, for folks sitting at the tables by the entrance, the foot traffic is literally on top of you.
Positive - We visited Saturday afternoon. We were seated quickly & the girl at the register was positive, well dressed, & attentive. A waiter met us at the table, gave us silverware and took drink orders. The waiter was also positive, attentive & well dressed.
Complaint - The back room was not being utilized, even though a large number of people were waiting for tables. The dark wooden tables & chairs are small & our table seems strangely low, even though I'm only 5'5". The 1970's chairs are the single most uncomfortable thing I have ever sat on & are definitely not built for the more curvy folks that live in San Antonio.
Complaint - salad bowls are flimsy plastic & difficult to use. They need to use a small dinner plate or something with a more substantial bottom. I saw several of the older guests struggling to eat their salads, for you basically have to hold the bowl while you eat in order to keep the salad from becoming a projectile across the room.
Positive - Salads were fresh & ranch dressing tasty. Tea was strong, tasted good, & a refill was offered. Chicken fried chicken & white gravy were also good. I was given a large portion of french fries & my boyfriend a large portion of grilled chicken tenders & mashed potatoes & brown gravy.
Complaint - chicken tenders were raw, my french fries were ice cold, & the grease used to cook them tasted old. My replacement mashed potatoes, which came in a tiny bowl, were watery, devoid of any spice, & the dinner rolls were slightly burnt. My boyfriend's mashed potatoes were not watery, but also devoid of spice. He liked his brown gravy; but I thought a salt lick would have been less salty. We did not ask for replacement of the chicken tenders, nor were we asked why we were turning back the entire plate with only the potatoes eaten.
Complaint - Our waiter took care of the bill, so we wouldn't have to wait at the register. But he made a loud comment about the $100 bills we were carrying, which I am sure was meant to be funny. However, we found it offensive, and were rather angry that he had alerted everyone in the restaurant that we were carrying large bills.
Note - the menu is similar to Checkers, but more slightly more expense. The wonderful fish options of snapper, salmon and trout have been removed and the seafood remaining items are more vastly more expensive than they use to be. There are notes on all seafood items stating they "take longer to cook", which is maddening, considering seafood takes minutes to prepare & cook, unless you overcook it, or don't know what you are doing.
We won't be back. I can get food poisoning from raw chicken at a competitor for half the price.
