Sharon L. Reed, MD, is a board-certified infectious disease specialist and physician with UC San Diego Health. Since 1994, she has also been director of the clinical microbiology laboratory at UC San Diego Health.Her research investigates the mechanisms of virulence of two parasites: Entamoeba histolytica, which causes amebic liver abscesses and dysentery, and Toxoplasma gondii, which is associated with central nervous system infection in individuals with AIDS. She also works internationally on new drugs for parasites and better diagnostic tools for infectious diseases in resource limited settings. Dr. Reed completed a residency in internal medicine and fellowship in infectious diseases at UC San Diego School of Medicine. She earned her medical degree from Harvard Medical School and a masters degree in tropical medicine from London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
