Stephen R. Hayden, MD, FAAEM, FACEP, graduated from the accelerated six-year biomedical program at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Albany Medical College and was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha honor medical society. He did a General Surgery internship at the San Diego Naval Hospital, which was followed by a tour of duty as senior flight surgeon for the Naval Strike Warfare Center at the NAS Fallon, Nevada.Dr. Hayden also served as the medical director for Fallon's High Sierra Search and Rescue helicopter unit. He then completed an Emergency Medicine residency at the University Hospital in Stony Brook, New York, where he served as chief resident.He joined the faculty at UC San Diego in July 1993, and is board certified in Emergency Medicine and Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine. He served for many years as the Program Director of the UC San Diego Emergency Medicine Residency Training Program. Additionally, he is an attending physician for the Hyperbaric Medicine Center. He is a Past President of the national Council of Residency Directors for Emergency Medicine (CORD).Dr. Hayden was selected in 2006 as the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Emergency Medicine, and is an ex-oficio member of the Board of Directors for the American Academy of Emergency Medicine (AAEM). He is an item writer for the written certification examination of the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) and an oral examiner.Dr. Hayden previously was the Western Regional Coordinator for the CPC Competition, sat on the SAEM Residency Committee, Graduate Medical Education Committee, Resident Support Task Force, Domestic Violence Task Force and National Procedural Competency Task Force. He was the 2005 recipient of AAEM's Residency Director of the Year Award, recognized in 2005/2006/2007 as one of America's Top Physicians by the Consumer's Research Council, received the 2002 UCSD Golden Apple Teaching Award, was awarded the 1999 American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) National Faculty Teaching Award, and was the 1996 recipient of the EMRA scholarship for the ACEP/Emergency Medicine Foundation Teaching Fellowship.Dr. Hayden is a primary author/editor for a major textbook in Emergency Medicine, "The Five-Minute Emergency Medicine Consult," as well as numerous textbook chapters, peer reviewed publications, abstract presentations, and over100 invited national and international speaking engagements.
