Weijen W. Chang, MD, is a board-certified internal medicine physician who specializes in caring for hospitalized patients. As a hospitalist, Dr. Chang is assigned to patients at the time of admission and provides care only during their hospital stay. He does not see patients at outpatient clinics and is not available for appointments. Upon a patients discharge, Dr. Chang communicates with their regular physician to ensure quality care. In addition to patient care, Dr. Chang oversees hospital service staffing at UC San Diego Healths Thornton Hospital. As an associate professor in the Department of Medicine, Dr. Chang instructs medical students, residents, and fellows at UC San Diego School of Medicine. His research focuses on quality improvement in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) management, transition of care for young adults with special health care needs and caring for hospitalized adolescents. Dr. Chang has published numerous articles and currently serves at the pediatric editor of The Hospitalist. He completed a combined residency in internal medicine and pediatrics at Duke University School of Medicine. Dr. Chang earned his medical degree from New York Medical College. He is board-certified in internal medicine and pediatrics. Dr. Chang is a senior fellow of the Society for Hospital Medicine, a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and a member of the American College of Physicians. An active member in the community, Dr. Chang reviews scholarship applications for the San Diego Foundation and serves on the strategic initiatives and academic affairs committee for Francis Parker School.
