The Los Angeles Superior Court serves the people of Los Angeles County, Calif. It is the trial court of general and limited jurisdiction. General jurisdiction includes criminal cases involving felony offenses that are punishable by death or imprisonment in a state prison, civil cases involving claims of damages that exceed $25,000, juvenile cases that involve dependent minors who have been abused or accused of crimes, adoption proceedings, divorces, legal separations, paternity suits, cases involving the treatment and custody of mentally ill persons, cases involving the estates of deceased persons and appealed cases. Limited jurisdiction cases include misdemeanor offenses that are punishable by a maximum fine of $1,000 and a county jail term of one year or less, infractions punishable by fine, preliminary hearings in felony cases, civil disputes with damage claims of $25,000 or less, small claims and traffic citations. The court has a location in San Fernando, Calif.
