Provided by YP.comThe Little Fox ceased being a theater in the late Nineteen Sixties. It earbned its name when the beveled glass/bronze doors and box office were brought from the demolished 1930s movie palace on Market Street called The Fox Theater to replace a sleazy, tired strip joint called the Bella Union. The new owner was the Kingston Trio who soon sold to a group headed by Keith Rockwell. The first performance was a British Comedy group hoping to replace The Committee as The City's hottest comedy ticket. Next was Noel Coward's Private Lives. After that came a one year run of the Fantastics. Bill Bixby appeared as the Boy for a short time and David Canary played El Gallo later. When The Fantastics closed there was a short run of Goodbye Charlie Brown before that show moved to Ghirardelli Square. As an interesting side light, American Zoetrope occupied the basement before moving a block away to its present location. Live theater and performance suffered during the mid sixties folkliwn the assassination of President Kennedy. The City went dark that Friday and seemed to stay that way. The jazz and live theater in North Beach was replaced by Topless Joints. Although Hungry i and Purple Onion ran at a profit, business was off. I was first the door man and then the bartender at the Little Fox from Fall of '63 until The Fantastics closed in the summer of '65.
