Great European style hotel in SF, share bathroom for some rooms. Near union square and Metro station close by too. Valet is a bit expensive.

Location, Value and Style

I travel to San Francisco annually to participate in the Nike Women's Marathon. Usually I travel with a team and my accommodations are taken care of, but this year I participated in the event on my own. As with the race registrations each year, the hotels in the area fill up quickly. And with the start line being at Union Square, location is everything!

I found the Mosser quite by accident on one of the large travel sites. It was offered as part of a package deal with one caveat - I could get the package (round trip from southern California and a four night stay) for just over $300 (discount applied), but the only room available was a "single." These rooms have a sink and mirror in them, but use a shared toilet and hall bath, all of which gave me pause because bathroom time is important when preparing for - and after - a marathon, for various reasons.

Still, though I had my concerns, my choices were limited, so I took the deal, single room and all, and I have to say, I was NOT disappointed. Though not huge, my single was clean and nicely decorated, and all in all was spacious enough for my needs. Better still, it was just blocks away from Union Square, and afforded me easy proximity to the start line. It is also convenient to the Powell St. BART station, and the hotels 4th street location intersects Market St., and is within walking distance to myriad shops, restaurants and entertainment destinations.

I was a bit concerned about street noise, but the reality is, even when I stayed on the 14th floor of a nearby four-star hotel, I still could hear noise all night. There seems to be no escaping it if your destination is Union Square.

All in all, the Mosser is a great value for the budget-conscious, and for those looking for a true boutique hotel experience.
