When a company offers free shipping above a certain amount, it's because the profit on the order is enough to cover shipping. That should be obvious to anyone. If that was not the case, every order above that amount would be a loss for the company. Conversely for the buyer, if the price with free shipping is competitive, they will place the order. If shipping was charged, it would require a different selling price to be competitive. Again, this is baked into the purchase on both sides at time of sale.



In this case, this part was $98 at backyardplus and $79 at other dealers. However, having dealt with byp before, and because of the free shipping, over $99 (I also ordered o-rings), I chose byp.



This company offers satisfaction guaranteed or return for full refund of amount paid for product. If you pay for shipping, that will not be refunded, and the cost to ship and return the item is the customer's cost.



Since it turned out the motor itself was also needed, I was able to source the combined motor and pump locally, and called for the return authorization. I was informd they would not refund the amount paid for the pump $102 with the o-rings, but would withhold $26 for the "free shipping" that they paid. The actual cost for me to ship it back is $12.



I asked to speak to the owner, and that call was not productive. She described online purchases she has made where she has had return shipping deducted from her refund. It took a bit, but at least she realized that the return shipping was not the issue.



Bottom line, I chose this business based on previous orders even though the price for the part was about $20 higher than other online sellers where I would have had to pay shipping. This business is Well within their right to renege on the satisfaction promise, but it is bad business. If you have the option, I would recommend searching for a more honest business if at all possible.



Also, here's the link to the Better Business Bureau. It says there's an alert for this businsess, and if you have a dispute, you may want to get legal advice.
