The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Department provides safety services to the unincorporated areas of the city. It has more than 160 sworn officers, over 120 correctional members and nearly 125 civilian employees. The department also manages a group of more than 400 volunteers and is located in San Luis Obispo, Calif. The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Department s patrol division responds to service calls, conducts proactive law enforcement activities and performs initial investigations. Its detective division is responsible for the investigation of criminal activities and unusual and sudden deaths. The department s narcotic unit conducts comprehensive investigations and undercover operations to combat illegal drug activities. The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Department also operates a jail that detains individuals in a safe and secure environment.
