My friends and I went to Churchill's this evening for a small happy hour gathering. In total, there were only 7 of us in our party. For some reason, management had only scheduled 1 server to work the whole restaurant, so needless to say, the service was extremely slow and items were forgotten. At the end of the evening, the waitress brought out 3 separate bills for the parties at our table. I commend her for having done that without asking. However, the establishment took it upon themselves to add an 18% gratuity for our having been a party of 6 or more. We questioned the practice and we reminded the waitress that some of us were only a party of 1 and that we were unwilling to pay an automatic 18% for the service that we'd received. She responded with an "ok fine" and slammed the bill folders shut with quite the attitude. As we were leaving, the manager came to the front door and told one of our group members that she was no longer welcome to return because she had used profanity with the waitress. We were absolutely floored by this comment since we'd handled the situation calmly, and with dignity. Not once was a single swear word uttered during the conversation. The waitress had outright lied to her manager! Needless to say, this was the first, and only time, in my 20 years in San Diego that I've ever stepped foot into this establishment. The food was OK, the prices quite excessive ($12.99 for single piece of fish and chips), the service slow and very forgetful (without apologies), but the waitress was very rude and is a liar. I don't recommend this establishment for any reason and will never ever step foot inside again!!
