Based in San Francisco, the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District operates the Golden Gate Bridge, and two public transit systems: Golden Gate Transit buses and Golden Gate Ferry. In 2005, 40 million vehicles crossed the Golden Gate Bridge and 11 million customers rode the transit systems. The district provides operation, maintenance and enhancement of the Golden Gate Bridge and provides transportation services for customers within the United States Highway 101 Golden Gate Corridor. It provides transit services without support from local sales tax measures or dedicated general funds. Golden Gate Transit bus and ferry operations are funded nearly 50 percent by surplus Golden Gate Bridge tolls and 30 percent by transit fares. The remainder is met by federal, state and local subsidies along with advertising and property equipment rental revenues. The Golden Gate Transit buses and Golden Gate Ferry systems headquarters are in San Rafael, Calif.
