Tallahassee is the capital of Florida and has been since 1824. The city’s name means “old fields,” which references the fields that once encompassed the city when the Alapachee Indians lived in the area. Tallahassee is now home to a diverse population and visitors can notice the Native American, Spanish, French, and English influence of previous settlers. Currently known as a trade and agricultural center, Tallahassee is a college town and houses Florida State University, Florida A&M, Tallahassee Community College, and several other small colleges. Tourists can explore the area and enjoy over 700 miles of trails, local street art, historic site tours, local shops, and several other family-friendly attractions.
