Rio Grande Valley Sugar Growers employs 190 full-time employees and another 340 seasonal workers. The mill processes more than 1.5 million tons of sugar cane annually, producing nearly 160,000 tons of raw sugar and 60,000 tons of molasses. In addition to producing an important food commodity, the sugar industry is a critical part of the Texas economy. As part of the national sweetener industry, Texas is one of the 42 states that help create billions of dollars in economic activity. In fact, the Rio Grande cooperative is among the top 10 producers of raw sugar cane in the continental United States. In Texas alone, more than 8,000 jobs rely on a strong United States sweetener industry.
